Supporting children's communication, language and vocabulary development in the early years

It has been my consistent experience that the most effective early years practitioners are those who understand the importance of supporting children’s language development through play and practical experience, and by engaging in high quality conversations with them.

This session will draw upon key research around children’s communication, language and vocabulary, and will consider the implications for practice. Effective strategies will be provided for supporting children who are operating at earlier stages, as well as ways of challenging and extending children who have a strong foundation in this area.

 This session will:

  • Hear recent research findings about the core way to support children's developing vocabuary.
  • Explore the key elements that lead to high quality interactions which genuinely extend children’s thinking, language and learning.
  • Receive a supportive tool to take away, that will enable you to evaluate the quality of day to day practice in this area.
  • See and discuss various video footage of real interactions which exemplify the key points raised.
  • Review the role of questioning in interactions with children and consider what types of questions are most effective

Target audience: nursery and reception practitioners, EYFS leaders, senior leaders, teaching assistants, childminders
