VIDEO TASKS FROM SESSION TWO
This is the video I tried to share on training that didn't work properly. As you watch it, note the following:
1) What is the adult doing and how is it working out for the children?
2) What advice would you give the adult going forward?
3) Think about the questions she is asking. Are they:
- developmentally appropriate?
- relevant to what they are doing?
- extending the children's learning?
- inclusive of all abilities?
- in response to what children are doing or saying?
- building on the children's answers?
My advice would be:
1) Listen!
2) Respond to what children are already doing or saying
3) Quit (some of) the questioning and start conversing.
4) Good conversation starts with good listening.
Now click here and watch the video on 'Eating Snakes'
Now consider these questions in relatiin to the 'Eating Snakes' video
1) What do you see the practitioner doing in this video that is different?
2) How does she make the child feel relaxed and open to conversing? What behaviours is she using?
3) How is she extending the child's language and learning?
My key takeaways:
- AWE - Authenticity, Warmth, Enthusiasm
- Serve and return
- Active listening
- Being present ‘in the moment’ for the child
- Being interested and interesting
- Putting the child in role of the expert
- Exploring an idea together
- Providing a good language model
- Adding and repeating vocabulary
- Asking questions which allow the child to explain and extend their thinking
- Giving the child time to think before answer
- Drawing other children into the play
What are your main takeaways from these interactions?
How do you intend to improve your interactions as a result?
