Enabling adults in play: Interacting with children in ways which move their learning and development forward.

A new course aimed at all those working with children from 2 - 7 including teaching assistants, those new to working with young children, and those who are experienced but wish to develop their practice in this area

This new in-depth and ongoing course, aimed at both new and experienced practitioners, will help adults reflect upon and improve their role in supporting and extending young children’s learning through play.
Over the weeks, this step-by-step guide to facilitating quality interactions in play, will draw upon my expansive experience of supporting and observing adult practice in this area. I will share what works best in terms of engaging with children in play and extending their learning in this way, as well as the potential pitfalls. Particular attention will be paid to ways in which adults can open up children’s learning and play, rather than inadvertently shut it down. Adults will learn how to notice and draw upon children’s fascinations and thinking and use these to extend their learning.
Whilst demonstrating how pedagogy, provision and assessment are interwoven, this course aims first and foremost to develop reflective practitioners, who understand that HOW they interact with children, as well as WHAT they say and do, can have a huge impact on outcomes for children.
Throughout the sessions I will use real examples and video footage to demonstrate my points, and there will be opportunities for reflection and discussion as well as very practical tips and ideas. Gap tasks will be provided at the end of each session as well as a learning log for delegates to capture their own progress in this aspect of professional learning.

Here is what you get:

  • Session 1: The keys to effective interactions in play versus the barriers
  • Session 2: Maximising teachable moments in play – responsive teaching in practice
  • Session 3: Moving mathematical learning forward through play
  • Session 4: Moving writing development forward through play

About Me

33 years ago I started work as a pre-school assistant in Norfolk and went on to teach and lead in London schools. I worked as an early years advisor for Lewisham local authority in London and went on to strategically lead the service. I now work nationally and internationally as a trainer, conference speaker and consultant.

I’ve spent the majority of my career working with leaders and managers in schools and settings, providing them with the support and challenge needed to effectively lead and sustain improvements in play-based learning.

As well as supporting at local authority and leadership level, I spend a significant proportion of my time working directly with practitioners in schools, day-care and pre-schools. This hands-on, current experience is key to ensuring that I retain a deep understanding of the reality, challenges and rewards of working with young children and their families. My work involves sharing what I have learnt about play and the difference it can make to children’s outcomes, and helping schools and settings to ensure that children are enabled to learn in as joyful, inspiring and memorable ways as possible.

In response to Covid, I created an EYS online professional learning platform called ‘The Place to Learn’. This is a subscription-based service which provides excellent value, on demand access to my entire collection of training courses for whole teams. Specific modules or whole courses are also now available to purchase separately for both individuals and teams.
