Leading a team in the early years

Developing a team vision, establishing improvement priorities, and ensuring impact

Many people working in the early years lead a team of some sort, whether it is as a room leader, class teacher, middle or senior leader.

Any leader needs to tread that fine line between support and challenge, inspiring their team to be the best they can be, whilst also establishing clear expectations for quality and impact. All this and yet many leaders in the early years report never having had any formal training for the role. Those that did often find their training omitted to give them the knowledge and skills they find themselves needing, such as how to have difficult conversations, how to remain empathic whilst also being assertive, how to delegate effectively etc.

In this two part session I provide a refreshingly new take on leadership training, focusing on the things I wish I had been told before I became a leader, sharing the mistakes I have made along the way and what I’ve learnt from them!

During these sessions, I will:

  • Highlight the importance of developing a shared team vision and the key steps to take to do this.
  • Explain how best to evaluate quality – from gathering information needed to distilling it into clear action points and providing effective feedback.
  • Provide support with establishing priorities for development and how to ensure that actions take place and impact happens.
  • Share clear and specific strategies for dealing with difficult people and having challenging conversations.

About Me

33 years ago I started work as a pre-school assistant in Norfolk and went on to teach and lead in London schools. I worked as an early years advisor for Lewisham local authority in London and went on to strategically lead the service. I now work nationally and internationally as a trainer, conference speaker and consultant.

I’ve spent the majority of my career working with leaders and managers in schools and settings, providing them with the support and challenge needed to effectively lead and sustain improvements in play-based learning.

As well as supporting at local authority and leadership level, I spend a significant proportion of my time working directly with practitioners in schools, day-care and pre-schools. This hands-on, current experience is key to ensuring that I retain a deep understanding of the reality, challenges and rewards of working with young children and their families. My work involves sharing what I have learnt about play and the difference it can make to children’s outcomes, and helping schools and settings to ensure that children are enabled to learn in as joyful, inspiring and memorable ways as possible.

In response to Covid, I created an EYS online professional learning platform called ‘The Place to Learn’. This is a subscription-based service which provides excellent value, on demand access to my entire collection of training courses for whole teams. Specific modules or whole courses are also now available to purchase separately for both individuals and teams.
